Gold Plating FAQ
Q. What gold thickness options do you offer?
A. 1 micron (flash), 2.5 microns, 5 microns, and 10 microns.
Q. How long does it take?
A. You can post your item to me whenever it’s convenient, and I will usually turn it around the same day. I am retired and do this as a hobby, so occasionally I may be away and it could take a little longer.
Q. What is your gold plating process?
A. After chemically cleaning the item, I plate it with pure palladium first. This creates a barrier so the gold does not migrate into the base metal too quickly. This helps the plating last longer and gives a better gold finish.
Q. How long will the gold plating last?
A. It depends on how the item is worn and cared for. If you keep it in a box and never wear it, it will last indefinitely. The more microns you choose, the longer it will last under normal wear.
Q. What is a micron?
A. A micron is 0.001 of a millimetre. For perspective, an average human hair is roughly 75 microns wide. In gold plating, 1 micron and above is considered good quality.
Q. Which metals can be plated?
A. Silver, copper, brass, and gold plate very well. Results can also depend on the condition and quality of the item. Cheap jewellery containing zinc or nickel can produce inconsistent results, and I cannot be responsible for how those alloys behave. If plating is not possible at all, I will return your item and there will be nothing to pay.
Q. How do I care for the gold plating?
A. Only clean with a professional jewellers cloth. I recommend Connoisseurs Jewellery Wipes. Avoid hand cream, perfume, hairspray, nail varnish removers, and chemicals. Even perspiration can affect plated jewellery over time.
Q. How do I pay?
A. You don’t pay until I’ve shown you a photo or video of the finished result. Payment can be made by PayPal Friends and Family, bank transfer.
Q. How do you return the item to me?
A. Return postage is by Royal Mail Special Delivery at £9.99, or you can include your own stamped and addressed return envelope using the service of your choice.
Q. Where do I post the item?
A. Please WhatsApp me first for a price and instructions before sending anything.
